Die Cast Products Introduction

Die-casting, by definition, is a process in which molten metal is injected into metallic molds under pressure to form objects. The molds, which are generally made of steel and referred to as “dies”, can be designed to create very detailed parts with little or no post-machining required after production. Die-casting is analogous in many ways to plastic injection molding. Dies can be reused multiple times because the temperatures of the molten metal are not high enough to affect the steel die. Die-cast parts are generally lightweight, and for this reason are often used in aircraft and automobile applications.

History of the Die-Casting Process

Die-casting by pouring molten metal into a die, also known as the gravity pressure method, is a manufacturing method that has been used for hundreds of years. The more modern method of pressure injection die casting was patented in the mid-1800’s to create lead printer’s type. The use of die-casting as a manufacturing technique exploded in the early 1900’s, particularly when zinc and aluminum alloys became more readily available. Today, die-casting is a process used for a wide range of products and applications.

Materials Used in Die-Casting

In order to preserve the integrity of the die, and allow it to be used for many castings, only alloys with relatively low melting temperatures can be used in the die casting process. Historically, lead and tin were the primary materials for die-cast parts, since they could easily be melted using conventional processes. Today, the majority of die-cast parts are created from aluminum or zinc alloys, but other metals such as magnesium or copper can be used. Each alloy delivers its own benefits, and therefore the product requirements drive the material choice. Aluminum can be found in aircraft and automobile parts, while copper may be used for parts that must conduct electricity.

Description of the Die-Casting Process

Before casting is performed, the mold is assembled. A mold can consist of two or more parts, depending on the complexity of the part being fabricated. Die-casting machines are categorized as either cold chamber machines or hot chamber machines. In a cold chamber machine, the molten metal is poured into a “cold” cylinder that is attached to the die. A hydraulic piston seals the cylinder and forces the metal into the die. In a hot chamber machine, the injection system sits in a bath of molten metal. A plunger is raised to pull molten metal into the injection chamber, and then pushed to inject the molten metal into the die. The mechanism of a hot chamber machine is much like a pneumatic bicycle pump, which pulls air in from around the pump and injects it into a tire through the tube and fitting.

After the casting process, the part may have flash, or thin metal around the part where the two halves of the die come together, around it. The flash is removed during post-machining processes. Some die-cast parts are plated or painted after manufacture for appearance, but the surface of die-cast parts are generally very smooth and hold fine detail.

Examples of Die-Cast Components

Many plumbing fixtures, such as bathtub spouts, are manufactured from zinc alloys using a die-casting process and then plated with a chrome coating. Lightweight aircraft components can be die-cast from aluminum alloys. Other examples include heat sinks with complex shapes and large surface areas for electronic components, lightweight aluminum automobile parts, and lighting fixtures. Die-cast parts require very little post-manufacturing machining, saving time and labor costs in the manufacturing process.

Die-casting is a manufacturing process used for a variety of applications, including toys. In the Napoleonic era, gravity pressure methods were used to cast lead military figures. Die-cast vehicles have been available nearly as long as the vehicles themselves have existed. Early die cast manufacturers existing at the turn of the 20th century include Meccano in the United Kingdom and Dowst Brothers in the United States. Companies such as Ertl have been producing die-cast farm vehicles since 1945.

Online Casino Gambling – Virtual Roulette

Among the constantly growing population of Internet users, there can be found a substantial group of online gamblers. Online casinos are, in fact, rapidly rising in number to fill the demand for gaming locations, and one of the more popular games sought after by players is roulette. However, playing virtual roulette is still a relatively new experience for many gamblers, even though they have played it in land-based casinos. The game itself consists of software that you can easily download from various websites, featuring animated graphics and sound that most often resembles that of a video game rather than a casino.

If you’re one of those players who’d like to try playing virtual roulette but has never gotten around to it, perhaps due to anxiety or fear of the unknown, then you’re probably unaware of what the Internet has to offer. Your fears are probably based on what you’ve seen or heard about the game anyway, and not on the actual experience of playing it online. Movies and television may portray roulette as a game that’s out of your league, requiring tuxedos and martinis to play it properly. But if you don’t try the game for these reasons, then you don’t know what you’re missing.

Any respectable online casino website that offers online roulette should also have a good online roulette guide available for the novices. In this guide, you can read about the rules, the variety of bets, plus the odds and payouts of the game. The Internet will take all the intimidating mystery out of this game so you can see online roulette for what it really is – a fun gambling game that can provide hours of exciting casino experience without having to leave the comfort of your home.

Now, once your online roulette phobia disappears, you will soon learn that French or European roulette is far more preferable to play than the American version. European roulette wheels only have one zero slot compared to that of the American wheel (which has two zero slots), which means the house edge is lesser (around 2.70%).

There are a few things to take into account, though. Before playing for real money in a virtual roulette game, it’s a very good idea to check first if the online casino you’re playing at is licensed to operate and regulated by a government agency. If everything is aboveboard and legitimate, then you can become more confident about getting your winnings paid by the casino, without any stalling or delays.

Some more things to check out before playing for real money:

• A good and reputable casino software maker always has a standard minimum payout. If you can find one that pays not less than 96%, it’s a good find.
• No stalling, no excuses, and no delays on payouts. You should be able to get your winnings as soon as possible.
• Full-time support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If they’ve got a toll-free number, so much the better.
• You should get payable casino bonuses and incentives for playing loyalty. Lots of online casinos are now offering programs that reward regular players with payable or redeemable points.

Remember that it is worth to thoroughly research a casino you chose before opening a new member account. After you have done so, gamble to have fun. That should be the purpose of the pastime anyway.

Roulette Strategy Tips

Wednesday

Author: Richard Legg.

Despite its growing popularity, many people still play roulette the wrong way. For example, I have seen many players start with a set bankroll, then keep playing until it’s all used up. Of course,

this isn’t what they planned, but usually it’s how their game ends up. If you want to play roulette seriously, the first thing you should do is to be aware of what you are doing and not doing properly.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but there are people who instantly flood the table with chips the moment they arrive at the roulette table. They place a small amount here, a bigger amount there; just to satisfy that inner voice inside them that’s always telling them where to bet and how. What they don’t know is that they are just playing with the poorest value of bets that the table has. So even if they win, the amount they get is just a little more – or even less – than what they originally wagered.

This may be an exciting way to play, but if you’re playing for money, you will ultimately find that you’re at the losing end of the stick. Have you taken note of all the winnings and losses you’ve had while playing this way? If you have, then you would discover that you have just been betting against yourself. You should play the game in a way that maximizes your odds of winning, and winning big. It’s not a good idea to bet more than what is needed to win the same amount. If you get carried away and start placing more and more bets on more numbers, you will lose a growing amount every round without you knowing it.

You have to expect that you’ll lose the value of your average bet for every round over 37 games. So if you’re betting $10 each spin of the wheel, you should expect to lose $10 after 37 spins, if the odds are running accurately. Yes, the odds aren’t the same for each and every game, but this should give you an idea of what you are up against. This is the house’s advantage over the players. Putting it simply, the more you bet, the more you should expect to lose over a certain period of time.

If you want to walk away a winner, remember to drag yourself away from the table when you’ve won a reasonable amount. However, this is also the most difficult time to walk away, because you’re feeling great and you feel like you could win a lot more if you stay for only a couple more spins. Sadly, it doesn’t work like that at all. You could win more, but there’s always the chance of losing on the next spin, and you will just end up chasing your winnings. You should always set yourself a cut-off point, win or lose. When you reach it, walk away from the table.

Try to place a bet on red or black, and bet 5% of the total amount you’re prepared to lose. Keep placing the same bet, whether you win or lose, until you win at least half the amount you started with, or lose the whole bankroll. Playing red/black or odd/even slightly cuts the house advantage to your favor, since you stand to lose only half your bet when the ball lands on a zero.

Another good strategy for you to try is to place a bet on red, two bets on row 1-36, and another two bets on row 2-35. Take note that the table is divided into three rows – 1-34, 2-35, and 3-36. Further note that row 3-36 has eight red numbers and only four black numbers. The strategy I just gave you takes advantage of this fact.

Using this strategy, you will win most of the time. If the ball lands on a number within row 3-36, the odds increase in our favor because there are more red numbers there than black. And even if the ball lands within one of the three rows over the next several rounds (as it most likely will), we have already covered two out of three rows, so our chances are also good on this one. And of course, we’re also hoping that the ball keeps landing on red more than black, too.

Whatever strategy you use, remember to think ahead and plan for the long term. Take into account that the ball has no memory, and that the chances of getting a number is always the same, even after a torrid streak. But also remember that you are gambling, so you’re in a situation where you stand to lose your money in the hopes of winning some, but there are no guarantees.

Golf Club Caddy: Which Type Should You Have?

Author: Paul Easton.

Which do you prefer a golf club caddy or a human caddy? Most golfers have an unusual relationship with their caddies. Do you want an over talkative caddy who disrupts your game? Or a best friend caddy who listens?

Having a caddy can make the game much more enjoyable. Someone who gives you tips for which clubs are best for certain areas in the course; can be a bonus? A golf club caddy is useful for golfers who find that having a human caddy can sometimes become a hindrance to the quality of the game .

Golf Club Caddy types

Golf club caddies have many standards. It can be as small as a clothes pin used to help a golf club stand on its own, to a larger golf trolley. A Golf club caddy can also be a combination of a single piece golf club carrier with a golf stand , plus can include a rib for strength, located on the interior of the hollow body.

Some inventors have made a golf club caddy that’s a mix a golf club carrier and the golf stand which has a golf ball retainer pocket. This is placed by the hand grip and the throat and accepts at least one golf ball. The slot means is the golf ball pocket for easy reach of the ball in available by contacting the ball through the slot and sliding the ball toward the front of the carrier and out of the golf ball pocket.

Other invention of golf club caddy is a lightweight combination of a golf club carrier and support stand adapter with wheels. So that golf clubs can easily be rolled thought out the golf course. The clubs can also be quickly and easily be arranged from a standing position when they are placed in the location with the grip ends on the ground.

With longer golf courses being made, the need for a strong robust golf club caddy has grown. Choosing to have a golf club caddy can be convenient because the golfer can roll his golf bag around the course all by himself, if he decides to work without a caddy.

Even with the presence of caddies, a golf club caddy bag has become a standard. It eases the duties and the burden of having the caddies carry the golfer’s bag around. So whatever way you may decide to go, golf club caddy is here to stay.

Keeping in mind, from the mental point of the game, a human, to bounce ideas off and ask for advice, can be a major asset and can improve your game by leaps and bounds. The idea that you can always use or choose not to use the advice, plus working with a golf caddy as your friend makes the game more enjoyable, which is the real goal after all?

Knowing Roulette Probabilities

Wednesday
Mar 26,2008

Author: Richard Legg.

The first thing you need to know about roulette probability is that the ball has no memory, and neither does the wheel. Each and every spin of the wheel must be considered a new spin, and all the previous rounds have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the new spin. Even after 12 successive spins resulting in red, the next spin still has a 50-50 chance of hitting either color. Eventually, both red and black will even out over an extended period of time.

For example, you would have an equal chance of getting 50,000 reds and 50,000 blacks from 100,000 spins of the wheel. These numbers won’t come up in turns, so you can expect streaks of four, five, or even ten of either color to appear. Consider the “eight reds in a row” sequence as our example for this analysis. If all the occurrences of eight reds in a row followed by a black number are to be counted, we would also discover the same number of occurrences showing eight black numbers in a row followed by another black, resulting in nine blacks in succession. If we go even further, we will also find an equal number of occurrences showing eight reds in a row, the same way as the blacks. Try this out if you have a roulette simulator.

What does this tell us? It shows us that out of the sets of eight reds in a row, you will see a 50% chance of eight reds followed by a black number, and 50% of eight reds followed by another red. The same is true of the black sets. So if you bet on black after eight reds in a row, or if you bet on red after eight blacks in a row, you till have a 50% chance of hitting the right number. No matter how long a streak of numbers goes on, your chances of getting it right would still be 50-50 for every new spin.

For the exact probabilities of roulette bets, here are the figures:

Double Zero Wheel (Bet, success rate, unsuccessful rate)
Single Number – 2.63% - 97.37%
Two Numbers – 5.26% - 94.74%
Three Numbers/A row - 7.89% - 92.11%
Four Numbers – 10.53% - 89.47%
Six Numbers/2 rows – 15.79% - 84.21%
Nine Numbers/3 rows – 23.68% - 76.32%
Twelve Numbers/4 rows/1 column/A third – 31.58% - 68.42%
Eighteen Numbers/Black or Red/Even or Odd/High or Low – 47.37% - 52.63%

Single Zero Wheel (Bet, success rate, unsuccessful rate)
Single Number – 2.70% - 94.59%
Two Numbers – 5.41% - 94.74%
Three Numbers/A row - 8.11% - 91.89%
Four Numbers – 10.81% - 89.19%
Six Numbers/2 rows – 16.22% - 83.78%
Nine Numbers/3 rows – 24.32% - 75.68%
Twelve Numbers/4 rows/1 column/A third – 32.43% - 67.57%
Eighteen Numbers/Black or Red/Even or Odd/High or Low – 48.65% - 51.35%

Remember, if you’re going to gamble, you might as well be a smart gambler. It’s always a good idea to keep track of your winning and losing runs. If you’re on a winning streak, be smart and quit while you’re ahead. If you’re losing, don’t fight it and don’t try to chase your winnings. A good approach to playing roulette is the next best thing to a good roulette playing system.

Osmosis

Wednesday
Mar 26,2008

Author: Simon White.

How Osmosis Affects GRP Hulls

Osmosis is the condition of visible blisters on a boat’s hull, caused by water absorption.

The process of osmosis is the same mechanism by which plants and trees draw water up from the soil to their branches and leaves.

Main Causes of Osmosis.

Long periods afloat without lay-ups. Warm tropical waters. Fresh water is worse than salt water. Resins that are coloured (including white ones) are more affected than clear resins.

The Process of Osmosis.

The fibreglass mouldings on a yacht hull are not completely waterproof. Individual water molecules are so small that they can find their way into the layers of glass and resin which form the boat’s hull. When molecules of water mix with chemicals inside the laminate, problems start to happen. These are chemicals such as water-soluble materials, emulsion binders for example. The water molecules can then have a chemical reaction with these substances, forming larger molecules of a new chemical, often acidic. Unlike the original small water molecules, these cannot pass through fibreglass and become trapped. This is the point at which osmosis starts.

Waterproof Fibreglass Mouldings.

GRP (glass reinforced plastic), or fibreglass hulls are comprised of thin strands of glass. On their own the glass strands are strong but flexible. When fused with resin it results in a more durable substance. Ideally the final moulding should have lots of glass and only enough resin to hold it together and seal in the glass strands, but most conventional mouldings have much more resin than this. Generally, the outside of a fibreglass hull is coated in a resin called a gelcoat. This forms the hard outer surface of the hull. Most yacht builders mould the hulls layer by layer, allowing each layer to set before putting on the next.

The one exception to this process is vacuum bagging or resin infusion moulding. This is where dry layers of glass cloth and mat are laid in a mould, and held in place by either an inflated plastic balloon, or another close-matching mould. The resin is then drawn into the fibres by vacuum suction.

The process is more expensive, but is capable of producing very light, strong laminates with a high glass content, and most importantly, very few air bubbles.

Types of Resin.

The earliest resins were orthopthalic polyester resins, used in the 1960s. By around 1980, isopthalic polyester resins started to be used as well by some builders, as they were more water resistant. Most builders used these more expensive isopthalic resins only for the first outer coats, and then saved money by using the cheaper orthopthalic resins for the inner layers.

Doubling-up on the gelcoat layer is one method to reduce the risk of osmosis.

The latest type of resin, and the most expensive, is called vinylester, and is even more waterproof than isopthalic polyester.

Treatments for Osmosis.

1) The best option in most cases is to cut or grind open individual blisters, repeatedly wash out with hot water or steam, to remove the ‘blister juice’ from any blisters, dry thoroughly and fill with epoxy paste.

2) On older boats, if there are no blisters, and even if a moisture meter shows high readings, one option is to do nothing! If there are blisters but they are small, they are not likely to have any significant effect on the structural strength.

3) Go to your local ‘Osmosis Treatment Centre’ and have the gelcoat removed, the hull washed and dried out, and the hull recoated with epoxy. This is a costly process and therefore should only be used if all else fails.

Pipe Care - Part One

Author: Jim Bennington.
Fixing a loose stem
Once in a blue moon a pipe smoker may be faced with a loose stem. Most of the time this problem will fix itself, but if the stem is so loose that it falls out, then something has to be done. Your best bet is to take the pipe to a tobacconist or send it to a repairperson. These people will have years of practice doing these repairs, and it will cost very little. It is very easy for an amateur to crack a shank when attempting to repair a pipe, as most of us, at one time or another will agree to that.

Nevertheless, if you are determined to do it on your own, first you have to determine what kind of stem is in the pipe. If the stem is Lucite, the easiest fix is to apply a very thin layer of clear nail polish to the tenon, allow this to dry *completely*, and then carefully sand the tenon to fit. A vulcanite stem, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated, as you will need to heat the tenon and expand it in some way. There are a number of ways to go about this procedure, but the best one is found below.

First, remove the stem from the pipe and insert a drill bit, using the end that fits into the chuck and try it for size. If it fits snugly into the tenon, the next size up is the one you will be using. Next, carefully heat the tenon over the flame (1/2 inch to 1 inch away) of a disposable lighter for a couple of minutes, rotate the tenon back and forth while moving he flame up and down (the intent is to soften the vulcanite, not melt it). Then take the drill bit and insert the end that goes into the chuck into the tenon. Push it in about 1/2 inch, be very careful to keep the tenon straight. Then while holding the pipe and bit with both hands, put it under cold water to cool down.

Fixing a stem that’s too tight
If the stem is still inserted in the pipe and is so difficult to remove that you fear your pipe may be damaged, then place the pipe in the freezer for several minutes. This works the vast majority of the time; however, if the stem still proves too difficult to remove, smoke the pipe, allow it to cool, and try to remove the stem again. If neither of these techniques work, then send the pipe to a reputable repair person.

If you do manage to remove the stem, place some sort of dry lubricant, such as graphite (from a soft pencil) or wax, on the tenon and attempt to reinsert the stem. If this does not provide satisfactory results, you will need to remove a small amount of material from the tenon. Wrap some very fine (400 grit or so) sandpaper or some “O” or finer grade steel wool around the tenon and twist the stem gently. Work very slowly and carefully, and check the fit frequently until it is satisfactory.

There have been relatively few legal opinions about litigation between athletic trainers, competitive athletes and sports accidents or injuries. However the courts have recognized that a duty does exist between the parties.

Protecting and ensuring an athlete is safe and healthy is the responsibility of an athletic trainer, which is similar to that of a team physician. In the case of an athletic trainer who is treating an athlete with an injury, several legal duties exist as a result of the athletic trainer/athlete relationship.

There are a number of potential recognized legal duties of a trainer or a team physician. Such responsibilities and actions may include:

* Properly assess the athlete’s condition

* Provide or obtain proper medical treatment

* Provide clearance to participate

*Inform the athlete of the risks of athletic participation given the particular medical condition

Legal Duty

There have also been a number of legal cases that have focused on the duty of the athletic trainer to a student-athlete. Whether a legal duty has been breached is assessed from the athletic trainer’s adherence to accepted sports medicine practice.

This is known as the “reasonable person standard,” because an athletic trainer is expected to act as a reasonable athletic trainer would under the same or similar circumstance. Legal statutes recognize that not all athletic trainers practice in the same settings, with equal access to resources, staff, facilities, or equipment, so the level of reasonable care does change according to specific circumstances.

Since an athletic trainer is a sports medicine professional they are held to the level of care that a reasonable sports medicine professional would be held to in a similar situation. This standard of care is usually established by expert testimony and is based on national athletic training certification boards, standardized training programs, certification programs, and state licensing requirements.

A certified athletic trainer must act with the skill and knowledge that is reasonable for the profession.
Properly assessing and prescribing treatment of an injury is not always a universally accepted method, which is why it is difficult to determine an appropriate legal standard.

Although sports medicine researchers do not universally endorse any specific grading scale, the scales do provide legal guidelines for a reasonable standard of care to be used by athletic trainers. However, data indicates that most athletic trainers do not even use these guidelines when assessing an athletes’ head injuries. From a legal perspective, it is important to note that the athletic trainer’s actions should not be compared with what the average athletic trainer would do in the same or similar circumstance.

Because many practices of a a trainer may be outdated, the law becomes a bit hazy when it comes down to optimal medicinal care for sports injuries. Just because most athletic trainers may evaluate an athletes’ head injuries on a hunch it does not mean that it is legally reasonable to do so.

A recent study showed that almost one third of football players who experience a concussion were held out of play for only 14 minutes. This is an amazing fact given that the grading scales for injuries generally recommend that an athlete who has suffered a minor head injury needs to remain on the sidelines for at least 20 minutes.

Legally it is possible to argue that based on the current scientific knowledge this behavior is not reasonable. If a case of this type went to a jury they may consider this behavior even less reasonable if evidence is presented that 14% of these athletes suffered a Grade 2 concussion according to the proper scale.

All serious sports accidents/injuries should be throughly investigated at the time of the event. If an athlete is injured because of negligence by a trainer or other individual, legal action may be necessary.
