The beginning of the regular baseball season will take off in Japan; but already there have been players who have withdrawn for example; Josh Beckett who did not travel with his teammates and Curt Schilling who is inactive until July due to a shoulder injury.
The Boston Red Sox first actions have not been very dazzling but this does not mean the team does not have what is required to win a consecutive World Series title; an achievement no team has reached except for the New York Yankees back in 1998-2000.
There is no doubt Boston will face though competition from five or six very powerful teams in the American League.
Detroit went through lots of trouble to acquire the Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera who was exchanged for the Florida Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis. On the other hand, Seattle included Erick Bedard while the Los Angeles Angels hired gardener Torii Hunter. And let’s not forget that Cleveland and the Yankees have new young pitchers.
Red Sox manager Theo Epstein stated that this is a very good league with many competitive teams. Beckett remained in Florida while his teammates traveled to Japan to inaugurate the season with a series Tuesday and Wednesday against Oakland Athletics in Tokyo. Boston expects their star player to recover soon, which will be a plus for the team and their plans for another championship.
Most of the 2007 baseball players are back including the Puerto Rican Mike Lowell, who was named the 2007 World Series most valuable player. Other like the Beckett’s absence opens a space in the rotation of the young promises Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz. The Dominican Bartolo Colón was also hired as insurance for the team.
New York won nine consecutive Eastern Divison titles until Boston broke that record last year. “This is the first year since I am here in five consecutive years in which we are not defending team and I believe that is a good position”, indicated New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, who was selected as the American League most valuable player last season.
The New York team will move to a new stadium during the 2009 season and will retained their principal free agents and will say goodbye to their popular manager Joe Torre who led the Yankees to the playoffs in their 12 seasons as leader; he signed a new contract with the LA Dodgers and will be replaced by Joe Girardi
In the Central Division; Cleveland has gardener Grady Sizemore as well as the winner of the Cy Young last year C.C. Sabathia, who becomes free agent after this season.
The Cleveland Indians along with the Boston had the best record in the major leagues last year. While at the American League championship series the Indians had an advantage of 3-1 over the Red Sox before losing three consecutive games.
Additionally, the Angels have a roster full of talent besides their strong background of three consecutive divisional titles but their two better pitchers: John Lackey and the Venezuelan Kelvin Escobar are currently inactive until they can play again.
Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners also count with strong active players such as: Carlos Silva, the Dominican Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn, besides J.J. Putz.

Bill James, the baseball numbers guru is being feature on 60 Minutes. But how do his numbers apply to baseball betting?
We are often asked what our best sport is in handicapping. At GodsTips.com we’ve gotten to the point where we are at the top of the list in every sport, so it’s difficult to single one out. However there is no question that our mastery of baseball in the early 1990s is what vaulted me to the point where professional sports handicapping would be my lifelong profession.
Yet, to be perfectly frank, while continuing to improve upon our results in other sports, over the last year and a half, I returned to the pack in baseball. It was time for some serious introspection. Fortuitously, going back to my handwritten spiral notebook scorephone days, I saved my picks, analysis and results from decades past.
Was I doing something differently all of a sudden? After a few hours of soul searching, it became obvious I slowly but surely abandoned some of the basics that got me to the pinnacle in the first place.
In some respects, I became a victim of my own success. In 2005, I had probably my best year winning what we call “Dandy Dogs”. Dandy Dogs are moneyline dogs of 140 or more (includes runline plays getting back 140 or more).
The downside was it led me to develop a bias against even small favorites. I’ve known and preached for years the basics of risk/reward ratio. For example, a 150 favorite needed to have a 60 percent chance of winning to be a break even bet or based on our threshold had to have 70 percent chance of winning to be a premium play. Yet there were nights I’d go 3-4 and still win money because of betting all dogs. Bit by bit, I developed personal chalk reluctance in betting.
Too many well-handicapped favorites of more than 120 became passes for me simply because of my increasing acute prejudice against laying the juice. Since returning to my roots, the 120-160 favorites have been a major reason behind my return to MLB handicapping prominence.
But even with picking our baseball underdogs, we became victims of the successes we had in other sports. We take great pride in being ahead of the curve with modern technology. The Internet made every team the “local team” from a handicapping standpoint because once regional information is now so easily accessible.
The World Wide Web has been a boon to us in preseason NFL with accurate key player rotation and motivation info. In college football and basketball it has revolutionized the way sharp players bet.
While super systems have been a great addition in all sports including baseball, our self scrutiny brought to light that we were allowing the Billy Beane and Bill James inspired new fangled stats to convince us out of winning picks.
In our first two decades of handicapping, we have had significant success with big underdogs by riding either hot but non-elite pitchers and/or fading struggling star pitchers. Yet information overload had us finding a fly ball/ground ball ratio or walks/strikeout percentage that talked us out of the same kind of plays that for decades won for us.
Let there be no doubt whatsoever that ERA and WHIP are still the two most important statistics in foretelling future results of pitchers. Likewise in handicapping offense we have streamlined with great success. Just like for 20 plus years, we returned to utilizing on base percentage and slugging percentage foremost.
We never stop fine tuning our techniques but our introspection reminds us sometimes we need to remember “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. Since returning to our roots in baseball handicapping, not-so-coincidently we have returned to the results our clients and we desire.
With all other sports, utilizing the Internet and cutting edge computer software is imperative to staying ahead of the curve, but MLB is the clear exception. Baseball handicapping is much like playing the game: master the basic fundamentals.

Baseball in the United States dates back to the 1840s, but many other countries picked up and played the sport soon after. In Cuba, students who enrolled in the United States educational system returned home to the island nation with a bat and a ball. The popularity of the game in Cuba was so high as to be considered part of the identity during the war for independence during the late 1800s.
The Spaniards assumed that the baseball practice and teams were just a cover-up for the preparation to go to war. Throughout the Caribbean region, Cuban players spread their newfound knowledge which increased the popularity of the game. It was two Cuban brothers who carried the game to the Dominican Republic and Cubans in the country of Venezuela along with Venezuelan nationals who had matriculated in the U.S. brought the sport to Venezuela, beginning in 1895 and to the island of Puerto Rico in 1897.
In Mexico, it was also Cubans who had fled from the island during its struggles for independence that brought baseball to Mexico. The Cubans in Mexico were assisted by U.S. merchant marines and railroad workers. Various regions of Mexico were converted to the sport during the years from 1877 to 1899. In terms of popularity, the sport of baseball is number one in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Venezuela with a strong showing in Puerto Rico.
Mexico still places football as the dominant sport. In Central America, baseball is also very popular. In the United States, players from Latin America and Puerto Rico have become a growing force in major league baseball. There are professional leagues organized in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
As in the rest of the world, football (soccer) is unquestionably the most popular sport in Latin America. Yet, it is also true that in much of the Caribbean basin, baseball is the number one sport. In fact, where U.S. imperial power spread throughout the world, and in Latin America specifically, the influence of baseball was the strongest. During a military occupation, many countries were introduced to American baseball.
It has been said that if Fidel Castro had been a better baseball player, the history of the Cold War might have played out very differently. Castro is an avid fan and once played the game. The reverse is also true: Orlando Hernandez “El Duque” left Cuba in 2000 and played for the New York Yankees in the World Series.
Baseball season in Latin America stretches from October to January. The winners of the four national leagues meet in February to play the Caribbean Series. Mexican players participate in a summer minor league that has connections with the U.S. Minor League Baseball governing body. Mexico has been given Triple A status. There are also Dominican Republic and Venezuelan summer rookie leagues that are affiliated with Minor League Baseball.
Although professional baseball existed in Cuba from 1878 until 1961, it was abolished by the Cuban government at the professional level. The Cuban national team now dominates the world amateur competitions, winning gold medals at Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.
About 30 percent of the major league players in baseball today are connected to Latin America in some fashion. Either they are from Latin America or are descendants of Latin Americans who grew up in the U.S. In the general population, only eleven percent of the people are from Latin America. Latino baseball players overwhelmingly are foreign born and claim Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic as a birthplace.
Unfortunately, some of the major teams have gained a reputation for an almost sweatshop approach to baseball academies in the Latin American region. Young boys with talent are signed and sent to these training regimens where life is harsh in the hopes of winning a contract with one of the major clubs. Many of these players travel to Latin America to play the winter league baseball games in the Latin American leagues.
The countries in the Caribbean basin that are baseball enthusiasts send national teams with championship titles to participate in the Caribbean World Series each year since 1949. For players of Latin American descent, the opportunity to play in Major League Baseball is high success and tremendous financial gain.
Beginning in 2006, the World Baseball Classic between the United States, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, was held. Nicaragua did not attend, but Cuba did send a team. The tournament was won by Japan, which was a tremendous surprise to many if not most of the observers.

More and more Major League Baseball teams are choosing areas in Florida to hold their spring training camps. This is done for several reasons. Due to the fact that the climate in Florida is very warm and very mild during the late winter/early spring months, a team from anywhere in the United States can start their spring training on time, and not have to deal with cold and snowy weather.
This allows teams to have the same advantage as every other team in the country. For instance, the Boston Red Sox cannot begin to train outside in Boston until late April, when the season opens. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Dodgers can train outside all year long. This factor contributes to the migration of many major league baseball teams to Florida to conduct their spring training.
The more teams that choose Florida for the site of their spring training, the more impact it has had on Florida’s cities. Over the past ten years, as the number of teams conducting spring training in Florida has increased, millions of dollars have been spent in Florida’s cities. The baseball franchises generate millions of dollars each season as well.
Since 1908, almost every MLB team has had their spring training in Florida. More than 30 cities have at one time had a training camp in that state. Currently, there are 16 cities in Florida that have training camps. These cities each host an MLB team, or sometimes more than one team.
The impact on the cities in Florida is easy to see, and easy to understand. For several months each year, the teams descend on Florida’s cities. Many of the players rent apartments or hotel rooms, which puts money into the rental industry. Also, players bring their wives and families with them to spring training. This also means that more properties are rented, because there are more people to accommodate. Many of the players choose to simply buy homes in Florida, near where their training camps are being held. That way, they do not have to worry about finding a place to stay during the training camp. This is very good for the housing market in Florida in general, because it allows more homes to be sold. It also adds to the renting market, because many players rent the homes out for the rest of the year while they are not using them.
The impact on the economy is significant. During the month of training camp, which is usually March, there is at least $450 million spent in Florida due to the training camps. The stores, restaurants, and other venues where people spend money, are completely full during the month of training camp. More people flock to the stores and restaurants, and things like attractions, museums, zoos, and theme parks, are constantly booked.
It is not only the players and their families that help to boost the economy in Florida during training camp season. During these training camps, the teams hold practice games. These games are attended by at least 1.7 million baseball fans each season. Because the training camp season is only one month long, it means that an extra 1.7 million people descend into these cities and towns with one goal in mind, watching a major league baseball game. This is an additional boost for the economy, as all of these people need to have a place to stay, places to eat, and most likely, places to shop.
The vacation and tourist industry in Florida also flourishes because of the MLB spring training. This is because many people come down to Florida to see one game during training season, and end up making an entire vacation out of it. Usually, they will travel between a few towns, visit theme parks, eat at restaurants, and visit tourist attractions.
The month-long boost to Florida’s economy is due to spring training. Florida exhibition baseball has been having a positive effect on Florida’s economy for 100 years. The cities that host MLB teams see growth in all areas of their economies. However, with the increase in population comes increased responsibility. More police officers are required to handle extra people, and there is a definite impact on the actual towns. For instance, there is more garbage produced, and more problems arise due to bars and restaurants being overcrowded. Therefore, the cities in Florida must keep this in mind and must employ more people to deal with the influx of players and fans.
All told, however, the impact of the spring training camps on the cities in Florida is a positive one. It fulfills a major economic need within these cities, and many cities currently vie for the attention of other teams.

Although it is typically high school students who are encouraged to participate in organized sports, children of all ages do participate. Participating in organized team sports is a great way to achieve physical benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and a sense of well being. Organized sports are also a great way to develop camaraderie and character building.
In addition to the positive lessons of teamwork, work ethic, and social skills, the heightened sense of competition which sports develops can be a negative strain on a child’s life. The obsession with winning, emulating their heroes in professional sports, or reaching the professional level can lead to steroid use. While the encouragement of children to strive to be the best is a positive guideline, some can turn it into a negative by experimenting with substances that can harm their bodies and their minds.
It is perhaps because of these extremely high standards that dangerous practices begin to take hold of young athletes. Also, it may be due to increases in news coverage of professional athletes using steroids. These are athletes who are idolized by kids. They are athletes who used steroids and achieved great success within their respective sports, albeit at a price. It is the responsibility of parents and coaches to make sure that all children, especially teenagers, are training in a safe and healthy way without the use of steroids.
Steroids are drugs that can help athletes achieve certain physical goals such as increased muscle mass, strength, and endurance. However, these drugs are extremely dangerous and illegal when used in competitive sports ranging from the professional level to even high school competitions.
Drug use, however, even the use of steroids, is sometimes glorified in movies and the media. Children may see an athlete set a record only to be accused years later of using steroids. America’s youth can interpret this as an easy way to achieve success.
The American media tends to report only on steroid use among professional athletes mainly in baseball, football, and basketball. What is missing, many times, in these reports is the rampant use of steroids among the nation’s youth. The use of steroids within the United States is increasing in dangerous numbers and should be a focus of the media in order to bring attention to parents, coaches, and teenagers.
As recently as 2003, it was found by the Youth Risk and Behavior Surveillance System that 5.3% of females and 6.8% of males have used anabolic steroids at least one time. These statistics are more than double of a study conducted almost a decade prior.
Steroid use, as well as other drugs, is an ongoing problem among America’s youth. Steroid use not only can become addictive, but can also have long-term health risks associated with it. First and foremost, extended steroid use can lead to kidney failure, high blood pressure, and electrolyte imbalances. Additionally, steroids can lead to increases in harmful cholesterol and risk of heart disease and even strokes, which can ultimately lead to death.
Any teenager using steroids is at risk of altering his or her growth patterns and development as well. Steroids in the system can lead to premature closure of growth plates thus preventing the teenager from achieving his or her full grown form. Even more upsetting is the cessation of menstruation in girls combined with the deepening of the voice, baldness, and growth of facial hair. Steroids are particularly dangerous for young adolescents and young adults because their bodies are going through natural changes which can be severely altered or hindered by the use of these drugs.
In addition to these physical effects, steroid use can also affect a teenager’s mental well-being. Use of steroids, as we know, can alter the amounts of growth hormone in the body as well as other hormones and neurotransmitters. This can lead to wild mood swings which can materialize into depression and even suicidal thoughts. It has been reported that teenagers who had stopped using steroids had fallen into depression (which is a common feeling among teens but can be exemplified by drug use), and taken their own lives.
Many parents and coaches today agree that something must be done to deter today’s youth from using steroids. The best way to do this is through education, so many schools and sports programs today are incorporating drug education into their curriculums. However, much more is needed to encourage steroid avoidance. According to the National Institute for Drug Abuse, only 45% of high school seniors believe that using steroids can be physically harmful. The media can also do its part to help America’s youth as well. More coverage on the risks associated with the use of steroids would go a long way, especially among today’s impressionable teens.
