Shaquille O’Neal scored 14 points and had 16 rebounds and Steve Nash contributed with 14 assistances to take the Phoenix Suns to a victory of 94-87 against the San Antonio Spurs.

In the last three minutes of the game Phoenix had much more points overall than the Spurs but O’Neal entered to wrap up the score board. O’Neal became the third player in the NBA along with Kareem-Abdul Jabaar and Hakeem Olajuwon to score 26,000 points and to block 11,500 rebounds.

The seven feet and an one inch basketball star played with all the roughness and usual power; he was even thrown over the steps of the third row to recover a ball; nearly collapsing a spectator.

Grant Hill scored 18 points including a basket from the base line only one-minute remaining; the Suns showed why they needed O’Neal to play with the rest of his team.

The Argentinean Manu Ginóbili played 31:59 minutes scoring 22 points leading the offensive of his team and recovering five rebounds and distributing two assistances for the Spurs; the French Tony Parker scored 21 points and distributed five assistances and recovered a pair of rebounds, while the Argentinean Fabricio Oberto played 10:26 minutes and scored four points while recovering five rebounds. Another player who gave an additional boost was the Brazilian Leandro Barbosa played 28:16 minutes scoring 10 points and recovering four repercussions.

Meantime in Toronto, the Raptors played the Seattle Supersonics achieving a victory of 114-106 with players like Anthony Parker who scored 23 points and Argentinean Carlos Delfino with 15 points.

The Sonics have lost eight of their last nine games and everything points the team is condemned to finish with the worst record in the history.

Then we have the Philadelphia 76ers’ victory over the Bucks a final score of 119-97. Thaddeus Young scored 22 points while Samuel Dalembert added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Andre Miller played the first of five games in seven days. The 76ers’ fourth repeated victory placed them on track to the game in Washington; the team is currently in sixth position in the Eastern Conference classification.

Another victory was for the Detroit Pistons that won over the Chicago Bulls with a final score 116-109 and a their seventh consecutive pass to the playoffs. Pistons’ Tayshaun Prince scored 21 points and was the lead man without a doubt. While the Argentinean from the Chicago Bulls Andres Nocioni played almost 29 minutes scoring a total of 10 points.

And lastly but not least we have the LA Lakers game against the Sacramento Kings. Despite the efforts made by the Californian team Kobe Bryant was not able to block his counterparts for example Beno Udrich who scored a total of 25 points including a pair of free shots for the Kings. This is Sacramento’s second consecutive win in nine games but there are other very important games that will follow and especially the one on Tuesday for which there are plenty of expectations.

There is nothing more embarrassing to a basketball coach than to spend an entire game attacking a man-for-man defense - then learn the opponents used a zone. Those coaches who have been in the game for any length of time will probably recall just such an affair. The object of concealing the defense is to confuse the opponents so they will attack with the least appropriate offense.

There are those who may think this should never happen. Possibly it shouldn’t, but it has happened and it will happen even more in the future. The trends in modern basketball defense are revolutionary. The days when you can scout an opponent and prepare for one defense are over. During the heat of a contest and the bedlam of noise created in some gymnasiums, the players are often the least reliable people to determine the opponent’s defense.

If the concealment works for only two or three minutes during some crucial stage of the game, it may well be enough to turn the tide. Close games have been turned into a rout in this manner.

One game was observed where the score was tied 29-29 at the half. The home team had used a man-for-man defense the entire first half. The second half they used a 2-1-2 zone with pressing tactics at mid-court and verbal signals to give the illusion of man-for-man play. The opponents were confused, hesitant, and quite frustrated for about five minutes. That five minutes served its purpose. The final score was 78-50.

If you use concealing tactics and they are successful, don’t let your opponent know what you used when the game is over. There is a great temptation for the coach to exhibit his sagacity. The boys are tempted to tease the opponents a bit about their inability to recognize your defense. Do a good job of conditioning your players so this won’t happen.

Of course, you want to be genial and visit with your opponent after the game. If you do any talking about tactics of the game just played, talk in general terms - don’t give specific information. Throw up a smoke screen. If possible, confuse them even more because you will play them again that year or another year. If you concealed your defense successfully, encourage them to think they attacked your defense in the correct manner.

Here is one of the simpler ways to conceal a defense. Tell your players in the dressing room that any verbal defensive changes you make from the bench are to be ignored. At the first time out when the gymnasium is fairly quiet, yell “zone” or “man-for-man” in a loud voice.

Of course, this would indicate a different defense from the one you are using. One of the opponents will be a real smart boy (if they don’t have at least one smart boy, it won’t work), and he will scurry around warning his teammates of your defensive change of plans.

Their team will then come down the floor prepared to attack the defense you have called. If your boys do a good job of making the defense you are actually using look like the one you have called, the opposition will be confused for at least two or three offensive plays. Those two or three plays might make the difference.

Concealed defenses can become much more elaborate and complex. They have to become more complex in order to be effective over a sustained period of time. They take good planning and hard work. Scouting information is absolutely necessary.

One such plan is the change from one defense to another by floor position of the ball. For instance, if an opponent uses a single post offense, use a zone defense every time a pass is made to one of their forwards. Otherwise- remain in a man-to-man. This means you will be in a man-to-man defense when the ball goes to the pivot or middle area. It means you will be in man-to-man from mid-court and until a pass goes to one of the corner positions.

Employ the method of concealed defense and you may turn the tide of you game. It’s worth a try!

Early Days Of March Madness

Wednesday
Apr 16,2008

Author: Kathy Giegel.

John was working in Springfield, Massachusetts at a YMCA training to become an administrator of the YMCA’s program. His challenge was to come up with a game for a gym class that would be physically demanding and could be done inside during the harsh winter months. His solution was to have two teams with 9 players on each team, use a soccer ball and use peach baskets. Basketball was born.

When John Naismith was asked what the team members and their uniforms looked like for the first games of his newly invented basketball, he said the players were young men 23 to 30 year olds with mustaches who wore long trousers and quarter sleeve jerseys with elk sole shoes and knew absolutely nothing about the game.

17 years later, what began as a small invitational in 1908 for high school boys basketball teams sponsored by the Illinois High School Association would grow to a statewide competition with over 900 schools by the late 1930s. In 1939 Henry V. Porter coined this tournament March Madness.

In the same year, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) held its first tournament with 8 teams: Texas, Oklahoma, Villanova, Brown, Wake Forest, Oregon and Ohio State in Patten Gym on the North western University in Evanston, Illinois.

As a sort of crowd warmer before the first NCAA Championship Game was played between Oregon and Ohio State, the fans were treated to a game from the old days. Two twelve man teams from the North Western
Intramurals all star team tried to put a ball into a peach basket placed at both ends of the court using the rules and conditions of the time when John N. invented basketball in 1891.

This Championship game would be the only NCAA final game John Naismith would get to see as eight months later he would die at the age of 78.

The trophy for the game was placed on a table courtside so all could see it while the game was played. Oregons team beat Ohio State in a close game but not before their captain Bobby Anst would charge after a loose ball unable to stop, knocking the trophy off the table and breaking it into two pieces. During the awards ceremony the commissioner tried to hand it to Oregon with the piece balancing on top but it fell off and they received it in two pieces.

In 1982 CBS Sports Commentator Brent Musburger quoted the NCAA tournament March Madness which would set off a great legal battle between Illinois High School
Association and NCAA. It would later be resolved that both associations would have shared rights to the term.

Today the NCAA Tournaments consists of 65 Mens Teams and the Womens NCAA Tournament consists of 64 Womens teams. The games are played for three weeks usually starting the third Thursday of March and continuing through the first week of April.

Opening rounds for the Mens tournament consists between the 65 and 64th teams. Women do not have these opening rounds since they have only 64 teams. In both Mens and Womens tournaments the first two days will play the 65 teams with winners bringing the teams count to 32. The next two days games will bring the count to the Sweet Sixteen. After which everyone will get a four day break until the next Thursday where the 16 teams will play down to get the Final Four teams in each tournament.

The Mens Final Four teams will play on the Saturday in April and the Womens Final Four will be played on Sunday. The Championship games will be on Monday.

After 117 years since John Naismith invented the game of Basketball, a phenomenon of millions of fans and players affectionately call this time of year March Madness, and with good reason. The insanity of no second chances, no consolations, you lose and it is all over faces the Cinderella teams, the wanna bes and shoe in teams all start with one equal chance to be the National Champions of college Basketball.

It is the only kind of Madness you can get in March and we love it!

Basketball Basics: How To Dribble

Wednesday
Apr 16,2008

Author: Jimmy Cox.

Dribbling is a very important fundamental of both offensive and defensive basketball. Offensively it is used to advance the ball in the back court, to make a drive-in to the basket, and to free oneself from close or congested defensive areas. Defensively, the dribble has become very effective in stalling tactics, especially when a press is being used.

The dribbler may bounce the ball with one or two hands. If he bounces the ball with two hands, he is allowed only one dribble. There is no limit to the number of times he can dribble with one hand.

If a player dribbles, stops his dribbling action, and then dribbles again, he is said to have discontinued his dribble. This is a violation which means loss of ball to the opponent.

Palming is another violation which occurs when a player momentarily stops his dribble by turning his wrist and “cupping” the ball.
Once a player has dribbled and comes to a stop, he must pass the ball or shoot it.

Dribbling can be more of a liability to a team than an asset if not used intelligently. Many players get into the bad habit of bouncing the ball every time they receive a pass. This prevents dribbling by the player who has the ball. He is known to be “dead.” If the player in possession of the ball has not yet dribbled, his guard cannot play him tight because the offensive player can dribble around him. He is known to be “alive.” A “live” player is more of a threat than a “dead” one!

Another dribbling mistake occurs when the dribbler watches the ball. He cannot see what is going on around him. This not only slows down the offense, but prevents the dribbler from knowing when an opponent is approaching or seeing one of his teammates cutting in for a pass close to the basket.

The temptation to dribble is strong. A player must learn when to dribble and when not to. Dribbling in closely guarded areas often results in the loss of the ball, or the dribbler being penalized for “charging.” Charging is running into a defensive player.

Moving the ball down court with passes is faster and more effective than the dribble.

Dribbling is done mostly with the fingers, which are spread, keeping the palm of the hand off the ball. You will notice that the palms of your hand are not used in shooting, passing or dribbling! This enables a player to get that fingertip control which is so important in basketball. The weight of the body is forward and on the balls of the feet. The head is kept up so that the player can see his teammates and opponents. A good dribbler learns to keep his body between the ball and his opponent. This will help protect the ball.

Learn to dribble with both your right and left hand. This will enable you to go in either direction. Being able to move freely in either direction makes it tougher on the defensive man guarding you.

A smart defensive man can stop a player who goes only in one direction. This is also true in shooting and passing. If you are right-handed, use your left hand during your practice sessions. If you are left-handed, use your right hand. In a short time you will be amazed at the skill which results.

Another important aspect of dribbling, especially if you are going at top speed, is knowing how to stop. Many times during a game players are called for taking too many steps after stopping their dribbles. This constitutes a violation and means loss of the ball to the opponents.

In order to come to a quick stop you must crouch slightly, so that your body will have a low center of gravity. Keep your “tail” low, knees bent and one foot in front of the other. The front foot should be flat on the floor and the rear foot slightly raised. Stopping in this manner will enable you to control your body.

This is an important skill in basketball and must be practiced diligently

Texas Advances to the Sweet 16

The Texas Longhorns beat the Miami Hurricanes and moved into the Sweet 16 as they led by 17 points remaining only four minutes in the second half of the game. But a game that might be an easy one for Texas rapidly bowed into a close one when the Miami Hurricanes’ 19-4 lope cut Texas lead into only two points.

The player AJ Abrams was fouled and went to the line where he peacefully dropped both free throws to place the Texas Longhorns up by five points. Miami approached down and Jack McClinton hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 74-72. McClinton had a great performance in the last game against St. Mary’s were he scored 38 points and in this game, he finished with 18 points.

In addition the Longhorns then inbounded the ball to DJ Augustin, who was instantly fouled and went to the line to shoot the two free throws. Augustin was not even closer to make the first one but he dropped the second one to give Texas a three point lead of 75-72.

Then the Hurricanes tossed the ball down the court and Damion James stole the ball. James then dribbled the ball down the court to let the time run out. With such an end, the Texas Longhorns classified to their fifth Sweet 16 in the last seven years.

AJ Abrams guided the Texas Longhorns in scoring with 26 points, statistically shooting 7-13 and shooting 6-6 from the free throw line. Additionally, DJ Agustin also summed up 12 points and had 8 assists for Texas. Damion James had also an excellent game, capturing 16 rebounds and scoring 16 points.

For the Hurricanes Jack McClinton led the team with 18 points and Lance Hurdle also help the team with another 11 points. With this loss the Miami Hurricanes who were the seventh seeded finished their season with an overall record of 23-11 and a conference record of 8-8 in the ACC.

“Give Miami a lot of credit for a lot of heart, lot of grit, lot of determination and the way they fought to the very end,” Barnes said.

As he did in his conversation with Barnes, Haith spoke highly of Texas’ potential for the rest of the tournament. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they win the national championship,” he said.

At this time, the 2nd-seeded Texas Longhorns will play number 3-seeded Stanford. Stanford defeated Marquette 82-81 in overtime in a winning shot game shut by Brook Lopez to move on to the Sweet 16 and looking for a place in the NCAA Elite Eight. On the other side, with two more victories, the Longhorns would advance to the Final Four in San Antonio about an hour south of Austin.

This game will be a great game to watch, Texas will come with everything to get to the next step. Stanford also will do their thing to advance and beat a strong Texas. Both teams are anxious to advance to the Elite Eight and go further.

To Force Middle or to Force Baseline that is the Question…on defense a coach must choose between “fanning” the ball to the outside or “funnelling” the ball to the middle of the floor.

Hubie Brown calls this type of decision a philosophy question, but I would have to say for high school coaches it is determined by your talent. I would like to present two of the basic theories used by coaches that force the ball sideline as well as those that force the ball middle. My hope is that you have a better understanding and can make a decision about what is best for your team. If you want to learn more about our online coaching community, then go to Basketball Coaches Club (www.basketballcoachesclub.blogspot.com) or email me at coachdeforest@gmail.com.

Why would a coach want to force the basketball baseline?

· To take advantage of superior speed and athleticism against 60% of your opponents and 80% of your league/district opponents
· To take advantage of your superior bench and force them to play more players
· To take them out of running their set plays and make them make plays instead
· To force an uptempo game
· To force turnovers for easy points
· To keep the ball on one side of floor so that you know where your help is coming from
· To keep the ball out of the most difficult place to defend (Middle; where is your help?)
· To keep your players aggressive and with an attack mentality
· Less reliance on learning how to defend all the various screening/cutting situations because you are not letting them reverse the ball and run sets
· Your kids only have to learn one rotation on the baseline

Why would a coach want to keep the ball off the baseline?

· To keep your players out of foul trouble
· To limit the play of your bench
· To prevent dribble penetration of a more athletic/talented team
· To prevent easy post entry to the post from the wing
· To force the opponent to run plays and out execute your defense
· To stop easy scoring opportunities because of poor rotation
· To limit offensive rebounds because of rotations on defense to stop the drive
· To contain the basketball and make players shoot contested jump shots
· No longer have to teach deny-help-recovery and instead teach recovery because the defender always starts in help (not denying passes)

These are just some ideas about how a coach should choose between which defense will suit their talent and experience for a given year. Of course a coach should teach what they know, but at the same time, it is the responsibility of the coach to learn as much as possible in order to have options for their troops when they go into battle. Prepare them the best you can so that your team can achieve to the best of their potential because you put them in the best situation to succeed. Defense is the start of that and I hope this article has helped you to better understand the two basic philosophies of defensive play. The culmination of the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament is a championship game that is played at the end of a dramatic single elimination tournament. This tournament is played each spring. There are 65 college basketball teams that participate in the tournament. It takes place in March, which is why it has earned the nickname “March Madness”. The tournament takes 3 weeks, and the national semifinals, which are called the Final Four, have become a sporting event that is extremely popular.

The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament began in 1939. Since that time, it has built an upstanding legacy and history. This is partly because of the many inspiring stories of underdog teams who ended up winning the championship. Through the years, more and more people began to follow the tournament, and it is now one of the most highly anticipated sporting events held in the United States. Many people do friendly wagering or betting with their families, peers, or work colleagues, based on the outcome of the game. The tournament is also broadcast on CBS across the country.

The tournament is organized in a bracket format. The bracket for the entire format is made up of the teams who are included in the tournament. Some teams are regional tournament champions from various Division I conference games. There are also teams that are chosen, who are not Division I conference championship teams, which make up the remainder of the spots in the bracket. These teams are chosen by the NCAA selection committee.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has gone through several changes since its inception in 1939. It has expanded several times. From 1939 to 1950, there were only eight teams that participated in the tournament. In 1951, for one year, the tournament expanded to 16 teams. This was a doubling of the tournament, which meant twice as many games, as well as twice as many chances for a person to see a winning team.

During the years from 1953 to 1974, the tournament varied in size. At times, there were 22 teams, and other years there were 25 teams. This fluxuation depended on different methods of counting the teams who were winning their respective brackets, as well as on the various ideas of those that were in charge of the NCAA at that time. The expansion of teams included was largely due to the fact that, as time progressed, more college teams were playing in the United States, and also due to the fact that college sports were becoming more and more popular with fans.

From 1975 to 1978, the tournament settled on 32 teams. However, in 1979, 8 more teams were added. By 1980, there were 48 teams. At this time the NCAA decided to make an adjustment in the rules of the tournament. In 1983, the tournament expanded to 52 teams. However, they had four of the teams participate in play-in games before the tournament began. These games determined who would go on to compete in the actual tournament. A year later, they expanded by one more team. These games would determine who was actually included in the brackets for the tournament.

From 1985 to 2000, there were 64 teams that played in the tournament. In 2001, they expanded that to the current number, 65 teams. In order to determine whether the 64th or 65th team plays in the first round of the tournament, these two teams play an “opening round” game. The winner of this opening game is the one who advances to play in the first round of the tournament.

The 65 teams that participate in the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament are not always the same. They are chosen by a special selection committee. This is a committee that is appointed by the NCAA. They also decide where each team will be seeded in the brackets. There is also an automatic bid, which means that the committee only actually chooses 34 teams. The rest of the teams are conference champions. These champions are automatically entered into the tournament.

In recent years, the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament has become widely popular. Therefore, it is one of the most watched, most anticipated, and most widely talked about sporting events in the United States. There is no telling whether or not the tournament will continue to increase in number, or if it will stay the same. The continuing growth depends on support for the sport of college basketball, as well as for the NCAA in general.
