Writing your first ebook can seem like a daunting task. There are many ebook details that fill beginners with self-doubt:

Can I write well enough?
Do I have enough material for an ebook?
Which font?
What size font?
And on and on…

But writing your first ebook need not be so scary. Many people think that their first ebook has to be one of those giant 150 page wonders. Not true. As a beginner, you would be much better off by starting small. You can begin your first project by writing a mini-ebook. A mini-ebook consists of about 5 to 15 pages.

Before those negative thoughts begin to creep in, let me say this: if you can write a 500 word article like this one, you can write a mini-ebook. Start out by determining what information you want to include in your ebook. Develop a detailed outline. Each outline heading will represent one chapter of your ebook. Using your outline, write one article for each chapter heading. Don’t worry; you don’t have to finish it in a day. My first ebook took me three months to write.

After you have finished writing all of the articles, read through them to make sure that the information flows nicely. Assemble the articles together into one document and your mini-ebook is done. You won’t get a premium price for a mini-ebook. But you can easily sell them at a price of 3 to 7 dollars. One benefit to selling mini-ebooks; they normally convert at much higher rates than larger full sized ebooks.

After you have completed a couple of mini’s, you’ll feel much more confident about developing a full size, and hopefully- premium priced, ebook of your own.

Many people start writing ebooks with great intentions. They plan to work a couple of hours over the weekend and finish by Sunday night. Then, over the next 2 weeks, as sales are skyrocketing, they will be well on their way to fame and fortune and retire to that island in the South Pacific. The problem is, the majority of these people never finish their ebooks. Once they realize that it could take a significant amount of time and effort, they hide it among the digital dust on their hard drive, never to be seen again.

This is an all too common occurrence. But there are steps that you can take that will minimize the likelihood of this happening to you.

First and foremost, write about a topic that you enjoy. That way, the normally tedious process of sitting at your computer, typing away for hours doesn’t seem so much like work. That is not to say that it is fun, but at least it is tolerable.

Write in a style as though you are talking to a close friend. If you are constantly using the dictionary to find the perfect word for this and the perfect word for that, you’ll never finish. Just write it like you would say it.

Start out by creating a detailed outline. This provides you with a road map. At all times you will know where you are in the ebook and where you are going. This also prevents you from rambling. As you can see by the order of the steps in this article, I work without an outline and I tend to ramble sometimes, too.

Set up a schedule for your self and stick to it. When I was writing a novel, I had a goal to write 500 to 1000 words per night, every night. Some nights it took me 30 minutes; some nights it took 4 hours. That type of schedule works well for me. If you are new to writing, you might be better off working a set amount of time. Perhaps an hour or two each night or whatever your schedule allows. The point is, set up a schedule that works for you and stick to it.

Never rush it. If it takes you 3 months to finish your first ebook, so be it. The Internet will still be there waiting regardless of whether it takes you 3 days or 3 years. No one is standing over you with a whip. None of your customers will judge your work based on how quickly you got it done. Focus on creating a high quality product, if it takes a little longer, that’s okay.

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend recently of articles suggesting that people write articles to send traffic to their websites, and enhance their credibility. In theory, the more articles you write, the more traffic you’ll receive, the more credibility you’ll have, the more sales you’ll make.
It’s an interesting theory. However, what those articles fail to mention is that your writing needs to be of a certain quality. And quite frankly, I’m seeing a proliferation of poorly written–or just plain bad articles appearing across the Internet!
Unfortunately, there are some publishers out there who will publish just about anything. That’s the good news. The bad news is, those publishers don’t have the quality websites or the huge traffic numbers, so your article probably won’t be seen by too many people anyway.
So, in essence, you’re really wasting your time writing garbage, because you’re not going to reap the benefits that go along with writing quality content. Remember this saying, “garbage in, garbage out!”
To get published in the top ezines and on the top websites–the ones with mega traffic, you need to have your act together. Publishers of top ezines and websites aren’t stupid, and so desperate for content that they’ll just publish anything that’s submitted to them. Their credibility is at stake every time they publish. They have standards and their readers have come to expect a certain degree of excellence from them.
After all, how do you think they became top websites and ezines in the first place?
Now, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m no Woodward or Bernstein. However, I take great care to make sure that my articles are well written, lucid and of high quality.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have my articles published by some of the top websites and ezines on the Internet. These publishers aren’t publishing my articles because they like me or think I’m a nice guy. They publish my articles because they feel my content will enhance their website or ezine.
And contrary to what you may have read, everyone can’t write articles–at least not good ones. You have to be honest enough with yourself to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. If you know writing articles isn’t one of your strengths, don’t continue to write anyway.
When you submit poorly written articles to publishers, you not only waste their valuable time, you also make yourself look bad in the process.
Writing articles is hard work, and if you want to write articles and you’re not good at it, then you need to work hard to improve and develop your writing skills.
If you’re not willing to put in the work that’s required yourself, then at the very least, hire a competent ghost writer to write your articles for you.

8. Know your audience. If you write with a specific target market in mind, your e-book is more likely to contain sales worthy information. Do some market research and find out what your audience wants to learn, what will make them grab a copy of your e-book? Discover problems that haven’t been solved, and create an e-book that offers the solution.

9. Write sales copy that will cause your book to fly off the virtual shelves. In your sales letter, talk about the benefits of your book, this is the best way to successfully sell e-books online. If copywriting isn’t your strong point, hire a professional copywriter to handle the task. It will cost you a little bit of money, but it’s worth it.

 made a bad mistake a couple of weeks ago and got into a discussion about poetry with my good friend, Henry County Herald columnist Amy Eason. Amy likes poems, and was telling me all kinds of stuff about them in an effort to convince me that I should like them as well. She was fighting an uphill battle because I typically don’t like poetry at all, in fact, the only thing I can imagine that’s worse than poems would be having Perry Como sing a few of them to me. Nonetheless, she made me promise that I would try to write one, and, that if I did, I’d come to understand just how rewarding composing them can be. Based on her powers of persuasion, and the added incentive of a twenty dollar side bet, I’m going to unveil my first, and I guarantee you, my absolutely last poetic offering. This tender epistle goes as follows:
Le Poem De La Sweat
I sit here at my keyboard fair,
Sweat beads streaking through my hair,
I just got home from working out at the gym,
In a very vain effort to get fit and trim.
I wonder why it has to be this way,
Joints a-hurting’ and old legs that sway,
I’m breathing so hard, it’s like a monsoon,
I’m sure I could inflate a hot air balloon.
As I worked out, I looked all around,
Amazed at the different type people I found,
I cussed the skinny people who don’t break a sweat,
The more they eat, the thinner they get.
It doesn’t seem right, yet what can I do,
They’re still real skinny, but my stomach’s all goo.
And there’s a big guy, who’s puffing like me,
His sweatpants are too small, his gut I can see,
When he bends over to pick up some weights,
I think of full moons, the association I hate.
To my right is a lady, she works hard and tries,
No weight in her chest, but lots in her thighs,
She’s standing there eyeing the sit-up bench,
If she lays down on it, we may need a wench.
Right straight ahead is a real foxy mama,
Her tan lines remind me of the Bahamas,
Her work-out outfits couldn’t be more tiny,
If she makes a quick move, and I might glimpse her hinny.
As for me, I’m on a Stairmaster,
A pretty good recipe for an impending disaster,
My legs are feeling like concrete poles,
If my brain were x-rayed, it’d be full of holes.
One minute goes by, then two, then three,
The water gods are all calling out to me,
My chest feels tight, my eyes feel glazed,
If I don’t throw up, I’ll be mega amazed.
Finally, I finish, and I can go home,
And sit my butt down, to finish this poem,
Amy, my dear, I enjoyed this plenty,
Now break out your purse and slip me that twenty.
Well, hmmmm. You know, I’ve got to be honest here, Amy may be right. Poetry does bring out a tender, compassionate side within me that I never knew I had. To be totally truthful, I really struggled hard from an emotional standpoint while writing this poem, in fact, tears almost came to my eyes several times, but, I fought them off in order to do my literary duty. I guess I’ve sort of become a true Renaissance man, scripting out tender verses like these. It makes me feel pretty good inside, to tell you the truth. I would go further, and maybe get into some pretty heavy dialogue about philosophy or religion, but I can’t right now. I happen to be writing this on a Monday night, and RAW is WAR is about to come on. And, as we all know, even a true Renaissance man like me can’t miss out on seeing Triple H in action…
