Though jobs in the sports industry might seem to be plentiful, it is a very competitive field. Divided into ten sections, this industry contains thousands of jobs in, sporting events, trade shows and meetings, sport sponsors, sport related media, sport facilities, sport retailers and manufactures, and professional sport services.

This industry in particular has a large turnover, a complex infrastructure, and an influence on many people’s lives via the media and participation. To completely understand the nature of the sports industry, one must know that it is composed of different components:

Different Components in the Sports Industry

-Sporting goods - equipment manufacturers, high street sports retailers
-Facility management, provision and maintenance - motor sport facilities, stadiums, sports and leisure centers
-Sports coaching
-Sports tourism - packages for fans attending the world cup matches, or Olympics
-Sports development - sports development initiatives, governing bodies for various sports, local authority sports development officers
-Sports-related gambling/betting
-Professional sport
-Health and fitness - health clubs, GP referral schemes, personal fitness
-Trainers
-Sports medicine -sports injury clinics, physiotherapists
-Outdoors and adventure activities - mountain biking, climbing, canoeing

To know every section of the sports industry, you must understand the type of activities that take place and the respective organizations that provide them. For instance, if you are planning to get involved with sporting goods, you should know the different types of goods that are available through specialist equipment manufacturers and high end retailers, plus names of the various companies involved.

Likewise, to seek a job in sports development, you should be aware of what “sports development” is and the various jobs available for sports development officers, as well as the organizations that employ them, like the local authorities and charities governing bodies of different sports.

In general, people take it for granted that jobs are restricted within the sports industry. However, there are many other opportunities available. A job in the sports industry could range from that as a professional athlete, to a ball girl/boy, to a general manager of a professional sports team. You don’t have to work for a professional sports team to get into the industry. You could start working as a trainer or coach for a high school team, a journalist, or a sports agent, or even work as a television broadcaster.

Salary Range in the Sports Industry

The sport, the team and the type of job, are some of the aspects that influence salaries in the sports industry. Following are examples of salary ranges of some jobs in the sports industry:

Coach: $20,000-$400,000+ (College) and $20,000-$70,000 (high school)
Sportscaster: $18,000-$1 million
Sportswriter: $15,000-$1 million
Sports Event Coordinator: $24,000-$90,000+

Education largely depends on the type of job one is planning to pursue. A college degree may not assure a job in the industry but may provide numerous opportunities for employment. Besides, it is almost impossible to get into the sports industry without experience. The best way to prepare for a job in the sports industry is to get maximum exposure.

How to Select a Career

However, we probably end up doing ourselves more harm than good. In truth, this question may not necessarily assist you on your career path. In fact, the question may be unanswerable, because there are too many answers, or because it presupposes some sort of commitment to an answer that we are unable or unwilling to make.

Making “The List”

The first thing you have to do when looking for that ideal career or job is to forget about asking yourself what it is you want to do and instead focus on asking yourself - what it is that you want to learn? Start by listing down all the work related requirements that you’d like to learn. Then, your next step is to rearrange or rewrite this list of items and divide the list into two categories - “the most important” and “the least important”. Once this is done, consider what career and job prospects will satisfy your need and ability to learn these things, in that priority. Alternatively, you could look for prospects that will help develop your knowledge and skills.

Before you begin, don’t be under the misconception that any single company or job will teach you everything that you want to learn. When you’re planning on changing your job, career or even organization, the things that you want to learn will also change. As part of managing your career, you must go through this list a few times every year. But, for the time being, this list will help point you in the right direction - it will show you what jobs and careers are best suitable for you and what you wish to learn, thereby making it a great guide for your next career or job move.

Understanding the Process

This whole process is done to help show you that what you learn in a particular job or career, and what you want to learn further can actually indicate what kind of career or job is best suited for you. In doing so, you will ultimately find the right career or job. Always keep in mind that there is usually more than one “ideal” job or career out there, which you will probably encounter over the course of your professional life. However, when you’re planning on making that leap from an unsatisfying job to a much more rewarding and fulfilling future prospect, this process will definitely come in handy.

If you are still asking yourself what it is that you want to do in life, you should stop there. Asking yourself such pointless questions is not productive. Instead, go through this fun process and let it guide you towards the right career or job!

There are a few individuals who are probably thinking about changing their careers and those who are using tools such career mapping. Then there are those who are happy and content with their chosen career paths, but they want to become more successful.

Which one are you? And do you know the secrets to success?

Secret 1 - Motivation

Everyone needs to be motivated to be productive. A successful career depends on how much work you can do and how efficient you can be while doing it. Your efficiency and productivity depends on motivation. To know what motivates you, you have to understand what things you find rewarding or inspiring. Only when you are truly motivated will you have a successful career.

Secret 2 - Hard work and dedication

To be successful, you have to be the kind of person who is not afraid of hard work and failure. You must understand that failures and success go hand in hand. You also need to be dedicated. Dedication is necessary to be successful. Without hard work and dedication you will not be successful. Some say dedication is the fine line between success and mediocrity.

Secret 3 - Enjoying success

Being successful is also about enjoying your successes, no matter how small or how insignificant it may seem. Celebrating and enjoying these little events is very important. These little events eventually add up to make big rewards. Small victories are like learning something new and getting a good review. Handling criticism is what makes you a wiser person and it equips you to handle and deal with future endeavors.

Secret 4 - Pursue your dreams

This is the most important thing that you can do for yourself. Following or pursuing your dreams with regards to your career is what is going to make you successful. As a child, you might have dreamed of becoming the head of some company and calling the shots. Wouldn’t you work harder if you were in that company and you had potential for achieving that dream? You have to work hard and be dedicated to your dream career and you’ll climb the corporate ladder. Nothing makes you move faster in the direction than your dreams.

Secret 5 - Uncover your passion

Your passion is something you put your heart and soul into achieving. You have to understand, discover and uncover what your passions are. Your passion could be basketball or rugby, it could be building bikes or racing them, or it could be teaching and tutoring. Turn your passion into a career. If it’s building bikes that you like, then you can become an automobile engineer or designer. If it’s racing bikes you like then you can become a world champion bike rider. If playing football is your passion, work at it and become and NFL player. Whatever your passion may be, you can turn it into reality.

Are All Security Officer Positions the Same?

Tuesday
Mar 25,2008

Author: Amy Nutt.

A security officer position can simply be referred to as a guard. The nature of the work requires the employee to patrol and inspect a certain property in order to ensure its safety from theft, fire, terrorism, vandalism, and other forms of illegal activities or accidents. Unlike police work and other similar occupations, this position requires less training. Thus, a lot of people who are looking for a second or part-time job are attracted to this kind of job.

Security Officer’s Nature of Work

You may wonder if all these positions are the same. Well, they entail the same nature of work as mentioned above. The job description includes protecting the employer’s properties and investments. It also involves making use of radio and other forms of communication when the need arises. A security officer will need such means of communication when seeking assistance from police, medical, or fire services. Some employers may hire more than one security officer, and communication between them is very important.

The work of a security officer doesn’t stop there. Under normal circumstances, they are also required to provide reports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, depending on the requirements of the company. For those who are in charge of a larger area, such as buildings and offices, they may be required to manage security cameras and tapes aside from the usual log books.

Duties Assigned to a Security Officer

Although most security officers or guards have the same nature of work, the duties that they have to attend to may vary from company to company. The responsibilities of a security officer position may differ according to the specific duties required by the employers. It will mostly vary depending on the place where they work and the job specifications involved. Is it a static security position or a mobile patrol?

Static Security Position

When the job is a static security position, then the work will only require the employee to work at a certain location for a certain period of time. A good example will be a security officer in a bank. In this case, he or she stays in the same location for a specified amount of time. If the position requires a guard at the entrance during banking hours, then the employee is only required to stay around the entrance during the operating hours of the bank. Usually, another security officer will take over at night when the bank is closed. This kind of position usually involves the monitoring of security cameras and alarms, as well as making rounds in a specified area of the building.

Mobile Patrol

On the other hand, the mobile patrol security officer position requires the employee to drive or walk from one location to another. The area that needs security is larger and so a mobile patrol is needed. A great example will be the beach guards you see along the board walk. These people ride a bike around a certain area along the beach to ensure that the area is safe, and that nobody will come to any harm. Another good example is a mall security officer who drives a car around the parking lot surrounding the mall.

Level of Security

Another factor that makes one position different from another is the level of security that is required for the job. For instance, if the security officer position that you’re applying for is to secure a nuclear power plant, then the expectations, qualifications, or requirements for the job will be higher. Of course, the compensation and benefits will be better as well. Same goes for the more hazardous positions such as armored car guards.

Ms. Carole Chehab was born into a loving family in Lebanon which pampered her as the eldest child. She was fortunate to be able to attend the finest schools and receive much encouragement at home. With such a sound foundation, it’s easy to assume that her life would flow effortlessly forward toward her dream of becoming a lawyer.

Stop for a second, however, and consider where she is from . . . Lebanon. Life has been very hard for the Lebanese. During most of her youth, the country was ravaged by a continuing civil war. Residences that she lived in were even hit with missiles while she was away from home.

When Ms. Chehab graduated from high school, the civil war had recently ended. During the war, the government’s baccalaureate exam to decide who could go to a university had been suspended.

Ms. Chehab’s graduation year was the first year the exam was reinstated. The results shocked many. Poor students passed in some cases while good students failed after being marked down severely for trivial errors. Ms. Chehab was one of the latter, failing to make the passing grade by two points in physics.

Not wishing to waste any time, Ms. Chehab found a school where she could study to become an executive assistant, a far cry from her initial plan to practice law. But we all must move on when a little slip happens that shunts us onto one track instead of another.

Because her school work in learning to be an executive assistant was exceptionally good, Ms. Chehab obtained a position as an administrative officer after graduating. In addition to handling many activities for the company, she developed excellent skills in English, French, and Italian to be able to handle correspondence in those languages. She did well and stayed with the company for eight years.

Deciding that she could handle bigger responsibilities, she applied and was hired to become the assistant to one of Lebanon’s most highly regarded CEOs. In that role she handled tasks like ensuring proper implementation of executive decisions, planning and controlling corporate budgets, serving as project leader in a number of areas, and handling correspondence with the firm’s owners and banks.

After performing those duties successfully for five years, Ms. Chehab was ready for a bigger responsibility: Now, she wanted to move into a managerial position with her company. The time had come to earn an MBA. She was happy to find that three universities accepted her as an MBA candidate.

There was a problem. With a busy job that required that she work late, there was no time to attend classes at a Lebanese university. How could she avoid turning that problem into a slip that would cost her another educational and career opportunity?

Ms. Chehab had heard good reports from people who had earned MBA degrees from an online university, Rushmore. After checking out those reports and studying Rushmore, she decided that this school would provide her with the quality, credibility, and good investment she was looking for. She would supplement her MBA studies with seminars in areas where she wanted to build expertise.

Studying online on top of her busy duties at work would be difficult. At the time she started, almost all of her waking hours during the week were devoted to work or commuting.

By writing papers about running her company more successfully, Ms. Chehab developed new skills in applying theoretical knowledge that made her time at work more productive and increased her eagerness to learn more. At work, her accomplishments through these papers earned her recognition, and her responsibilities began to expand.

Because she had been working closely with the CEO, she understood a lot about the company and its markets. She used that understanding to develop powerful strategic insights into new choices for better performance with less risk.

Her world was shaken again, however, when conflict broke out between Israel and Lebanon. Once again, it was dangerous to live in Lebanon. It was difficult to work and her company faced major challenges as business dried up due to war-time conditions. Even if she could find time to work on a paper, there was no guarantee that she would be able to connect to the Internet to send the paper to a professor.

Would this fighting cause another slip? No! Ms. Chehab was well aware that you have to do your best no matter how difficult life is.

A favorite Zig Ziglar quote inspired her: “You want to soar up where the eagles fly, up there far in the sky, where you can touch the sun with your wings, you want people to know you have the ability and skills that take you to your place up there and appreciate you accordingly . . . No matter what . . . Always remember: It is never your aptitude but your attitude that determines your altitude.”

Despite the difficulties, she battled on and earned her degree in two years. Her company was so pleased with her work and academic progress that she was promoted to being the CEO’s Office Manager and Board Coordinator upon graduating.

What’s in the future for Ms. Chehab? For now, she’s enjoying a little respite from working long hours and studying during her limited spare time.

But there’s possibly a Ph.D. in her future. With her attitude, it’s likely that her career will reach new heights.

Ms. Chehab has demonstrated exceptional talent in solving strategic questions. With her skills, it’s likely she’ll be asked to run a business. When such an opportunity comes, I’m sure she’ll be ready for the challenge.

How can you adjust your attitude and skills so that little slips in the past won’t slow down the progress of your business career?

Do What You Are!

It seems like a no-brainer to say that we as people should be doing what they’re best suited for- what they’re created to be doing. Of course, if you feel like you are an accident, well, good luck.

The husband and wife team of Tieger & Tieger wrote a primer for all those trying to find their niche in the marketplace. They wrote a book nearly fifteen years ago with the same title that you see in the headline to this commentary. The premise is that we should be doing that which our personality reveals: yes, a personality test. Theirs is not a complicated formula, but a time-tested sixteen point description as to who we are, who YOU are.

Recently, Admiral William Fallon had to step down (retire) because his conscience wouldn’t allow him to do what his commander in chief desired.

Their work owes much of its credit to Carl Jung and the mother-daughter team of Katharine and Isabel Briggs. We operate in a sea of personalities and as Tieger said, “Extraverts have something of an advantage in our society because there are so many of them. About 75% of the American population is extraverted, which helps account for our proclivity for fast food and sound bites.” Think about it.

Life and success are about more than just luck or hard work though they are important.

Very much like the concept of somatotyping, we’re kicking against the pricks to try and force our personality into a job that doesn’t want us. You can’t take a four foot nine, four hundred pound person and make an olympic pole vaulter out of them. It simply doesn’t work: no matter how great the desire might be.

It all goes back to who we ARE. We cannot DO, outside of who we BE (and that’s not bad English). BEING is always a precursor to DOING, which is why we must DO what, and who we ARE!

The importance and value of coaching is often overlooked in today’s corporate and result-driven society. The truth is that training is the cornerstone of success.

A top ranking CEO in a corporation could not have reached his designation had he not been given the proper coaching and development by his previous managers. An advertising guru would most likely have had a solid coaching in the industry to have reached the pinnacle upon which he now sits.

In the non-corporate arena, a world class musician would have needed years and years of solid coaching before stepping into the limelight. Or similarly, an artist would have spent a large chunk of his learning to create art before making a living from it.

Everywhere you look, the impact and the importance of coaching is evident. Unfortunately, the lucrative nature of coaching as a career does not particularly reflect its importance, with many coaches perhaps being underpaid and not earning as much as they should.

The good news is that, if you are a coach, a great way you can make additional money from your career is to expand your business by using the Internet. You will want to get a domain name that is your name (coaches are known by their names first and foremost, not by the company that they run) and set up a Blog on it. By doing so, you open up a whole world of money making opportunities you probably never knew existed.

Here are some of the great benefits of coaching online. Go through them carefully and see how much leverage you can achieve with the Internet:

1. Coach Customers Via E-Mail
In the physical realm, coaching often requires a face-to-face approach, such as training seminars, personal coaching and such. Online, however, you can choose to coaching your clients via e-mail, and sell this coaching “course” on your Blog.

For example, if you were providing management coaching, you could send one e-mail a week to your client. Within the e-mail would be the weekly course on management, covering a particular topic.

Or if you were providing artistic coaching, you could do the same, breaking down the topics just as you would in a class and putting it down in easy to understand words for your clients. The great benefit of this is that you don’t have to spend time physically BEING with your client to coach them. There is also practically no overhead costs for you (aside from your Blog maintenance) since e-mail is free to send!

In addition, there is a piece of e-mail software called a Sequential Autoresponder that you can use that will automatically send those lessons out to your clients. You can set the intervals between e-mails to be as many days as you wish. All you need to do is to load up all your separate coaching lessons into the Sequential Autoresponder, and you’re done.

When you have a new client, simply subscribe him to the Sequential Autoresponder and he’ll start getting Lesson No.1 from that point onward until the entire sequence is exhausted. This is easy to do, and very powerful. Best of all, your client does not know you’re using software to help you gain massive leverage!

2. Write E-books
As a coaching, you no doubt have a lot of expertise in your field. A great way to make money from this is by writing an informational e-book on your field and selling it on your website.

This can be as easy as compiling all or some your e-mail courses (as above) into a digitally formatted book and selling it on your website. Plenty of people would be willing to pay for an effective coaching e-book that costs a fraction of what it would it would costs to go to a coach in person.

3. Train customers from all over the world
The great thing about the Internet is that it can reach out to people all over the world. And since you can coach people using digital mediums, you don’t have to limit your clients to those in your vicinity - you can coach people from all over the world!

4. Multiply your efforts
Just like how you can coach more than ONE person in a class, you can do the same on the Internet, except instead of coaching a maximum of just 20 or 30 people at a time, you can coach hundreds of people with virtually no extra effort.

This is because everyone is coached via e-mail - so once you’ve written ONE e-mail, you can use it over and over again for ALL of your clients. With e-mail personalization that is normally a feature of a Sequential Autoresponder software, you can include your clients’ names in the e-mail automatically so that it seems that you are actually giving them a one-on-one training session - but without any extra work on your part!

5. Make a Name for Yourself Online
Over time, as your Blog becomes more and more popular, you will become well known in the Internet community as well as your own chosen field. This is especially so if you use your own name as your domain name!

After some time, people from all over the world will know who you are and what coaching you provide at the Blog sitting at your domain. You may even get invited to give seminars/talks in your country or overseas!

The advantages of working as a coach on the Internet are not limited to the above five - there are plenty more. So if you are a coach who has often thought to yourself that you aren’t being paid nearly enough for what you do - then this is your opportunity to make it right.

The Internet is rife with opportunity for coaches. Don’t let you or your business get left behind!

If you’re an accountant, you need not be a slave to your “job” and your company. You can do this by using the Internet to reach out to more people who are potential clients for your services, thus making you more money, or even eliminating your “job” altogether.

Heare are 3 reasons why. They may be obvious to you, but what’s not so obvious is how you can leverage off the Internet that now has a huge population of users all over the world.

1.You Are In Demand
Not many people in the world are great with numbers, so it does take a special gift to work with money and numbers consistently. And thus, as an accountant, you are one of the elite few people who are properly equipped to provide sound financial advice to whoever needs it - and don’t we all?

With more than one billion people using the Internet from all over the world, constant opening hours and easy accessibility, there is no better place to provide a service that is in demand (yours) than on the World Wide Web. All you need is an ‘office’ (your domain address - it could be your name), a product (your accounting and financial services and consultancy) and a way to sell yourself to potential customers (your website or blog).

2.You Can Easily Sell Your Expertise
One of the biggest uses of the Internet is by people looking for information. It is no wonder that encyclopedias are going out of fashion when the entire world’s information is now accessible with a computer and an Internet connection.

This is in fact a very big benefit for you, as an accountant looking to make extra income from the Internet. After all, if people are going to the Internet to look for information on company accounting, doing their taxes, applying for loans, lowering company costs and other such information related to your field of practice, then there’s nothing stopping you from providing this information to them at a cost.

For example, you could write an e-book (a book written in an electronic format, such as PDF) providing clear, step by step details to filling out a tax return (for whichever country you reside) and you can market it to every single working individual in your country! You can also provide basic accounting information via e-mail as an e-course for people who wish to do their own book keeping.

3.You Create More Opportunities
By providing your service online, you will automatically open yourself up to a whole world of new and exciting opportunities. Over time, you may build up quite a reputation in the online community as a trusted accountant.

And this may take no more effort than writing two to three informative blog posts every week. Blog posts are easily picked up by Search Engines, and you will get some free visitors looking for the information you’re providing. As your readers grow, so will your prominence, and as they say, word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

The above are just a few of the advantages an accountant stands to gain by securing a domain and creating a website marketing his services. At such a low running cost, and with the possibility of great returns, this is one no-risk investment no accountant should pass up!

Careers in Energy Healing

There are a range of careers in energy healing, including Reiki, acupuncture, chromotherapy, electromagnetic therapy, energy medicine, quantum touch, and therapeutic touch, among others.

Careers in energy healing like therapeutic touch, for example, involve the practitioner sweeping the palms of his hands over a patient or client’s body to sense the energy field. Facilitating the electromagnetic energy field, the practitioner is able to manipulate the energy field to open the flow of life energy and release any energy blocks to promote healing and wellbeing.

Acupuncture practice is also one of the many careers in energy healing and alternative medicine that facilitates meridians (energy channels) of the body. By carefully placing fine, hair-like needles along these energy channels, it is believed that energy blockages are removed; allowing the “Qi,” or life energy to flow freely throughout the body, improving health and promoting healing to specific body systems.

Careers in energy healing like Reiki are often combined with massage therapy or holistic health practices. Reiki is both a spiritual and energy medicine that is used for the treatment of emotional and physical illnesses. In a Reiki healing session, the practitioner places her hands on the client’s body in a variety of positions; however, Reiki can be applied without physical touch. Typically, the hands are left in these positions for about three to five minutes to restore energy and healing to the body.

Depending on which careers in energy healing you would like to pursue, it is important to note that as part of the greater holistic medicine practices, training in energy healing medicine can accentuate an already-established natural health or massage practice; or for the entrepreneur, providing energy healing medicine by itself can be both personally and professionally rewarding.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in learning more about this or other healing arts programs, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started!
