Suzuki came through with one of the best concepts of the show, the Kizashi 2. It’s a new version of the Kizashi concept the company showed in Frankfurt. Under the hood is the suze’s highest-displacement engine ever, a 3.6-liter V6. Among the concept cars here, this should win the Should Have a 472 ci Cadillac V8 Award. As one of our Tokyo compatriots said, it’s the good counterpart to the evil Maybach Exelero.

The Tonkalicious Suzuki X-HEAD is already one of our favorite Tokyo ‘07 concepts, and not one of us has laid eyes on it in the metal. We hear the 4×4’s a dash over 12 feet long and is powered by a 1372cc engine, but that’s about it. For the rest, it seems we’ll have to wait. The new batch of photos we’ve obtained shows us that the plucky pickup can carry at least one dirt bike in back and that its bedsides flip down to reveal additional storage compartments. The matte charcoal tailgate matches the grillework, which receives the same finish. Inside, the “X” theme is carried through in the yellow portions of the seats (which do not look comforta
ble) and the shape of the harnesses. The letter “X” is so prevalent, we half expect to see this thing in the motor pool at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. We’ll bring you full coverage from Tokyo later in the month.

Since we don’t really consider Time Magazine the definitive source for things automotive, we aren’t surprised at the wrongness of some of their (well, actually Pulitzer-winning writer Dan Neil’s) choices. The Model T? The Fuller Dymaxion? The ‘71 Imperial? There’s something to piss off all of us here, though admittedly they did include such citrusy favorites as the execrable V8-6-4 Caddy and the breathtakingly unreliable Triumph TR-7. In any case, you get a list of a bunch of interesting cars- just the thing for a Monday morning.

Whither the next Mitsubishi Galant? We’ll see. But you could do far worse than betting it’ll look like the Concept ZF Mitsubishi’s rolling out next month in Tokyo. The Concept ZT is a showcase platform for Mitsubishi’s latest midsize styling play, and features the company’s latest driver-assistance features, like lane-drift warning, all-around-view monitors, and parking assistance. It’s also fitted with a 2.2-liter low-C02 diesel that produces 188 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque for low-down sedan-pulling fun. Also, to satisfy new pedestrian safety laws, the hood pops up to act as a buffer for a struck streetwalker’s head, minimizing injury and making for some awkward post-accident conversations.

Along with a multitude of oddball oil burning two and a half box hood-scoop equipped hatchbacks in Frankfurt are more bicycles than you can shake a fist at. Most are set up for city trawling, some complete with mini trailer balls for what we assume are human pulled trailers. This vintage Bauer caught out eye first day in, and looked as if it had seen a few chancellors after logging many miles.

Mitsubishi released more images of its i MIEV Sport concept, the semi-teardrop shaped minicar that show off its prototypical in-wheel electric vehicle platform. For Mitsu, it’s the latest in a string of in-wheel EV concepts, each demonstrating the system’s application in a specific segment — like compacts, vans. This one’s the sporty version. It features the same S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) as found in the company’s new Evo X. The system combines Active Center Differential (ACD), Active Yaw Control (AYC), Active Stability Control (ASC), and Sports ABS components, with braking force control. Look for the live reveal next month, at the Tokyo Messe, as photojournos’ harpoon-sharp elbows battle over first shots of the Evo X — and this too, maybe.
