Passing
Passing the football is the most important part to a successful team and player. Without the ability to pass the ball consistently a team will never keep possession, and a player will never make it to the next level. A great passing player (Juan Roman Riquelme) can be as enjoyable to watch as a great dribbler. Check the bottom of the article to see one of the best passing compilations.

What it takes to be a successful passer
-Receiving
-Deciding where to pass the ball
-Analyse if the person is in space or do you have a better option
-Choice of pass
-Weight of pass
-Support

Receiving
Receiving, or your first touch can be the difference between a pass reaching it’s player or being unsuccessful. Your first touch is critical, is must control the ball, move the ball away from your opposition, create a opening for your pass. This must be done at a pace in which the defender can’t catch you, and you don’t take to long that your team mate is shut down. A player must be able to control all kind of passes (a long the ground, chipped in the air, a ball driven cross field etc). A player must also be able to control the ball with all parts of the body (chest, thigh, feet, head etc). A player can train this attribute by having a partner knocking different types of passes to each other. The 2 most aspect of a player’s first touch is the ability to bring the ball under control and keep the ball moving.

Deciding where to pass the ball
This aspect of football becomes more important the higher level you play. In reality a player should know of at least one option before they get ball in case they put under pressure. This done by not ball watching, but by continuously looking around at your options. As you improve this skill you will become aware of more damaging passes, and won’t get caught with the ball. Then you will naturally recognize situations where a flick can be potentially defense splitting etc.

Analyse if the person is in space or do you have a better option
Sometimes the difference between decent players and good players, is that a decent player takes the option of playing backwards (e.g. CM playing the ball back to his RB), where as a good player will sees the situation and will play the ball forward (e.g. roll the ball into the strikers feet.). You cannot play the ball forward every time but te good players have the awareness to find a relatively safe options to play forward, and continue building pressure on the opposition. One of the best at this is Juan Roman Riquelme. It can be hard to improve this skill it mostly comes from playing more matches, but if you watch the good passers you can pick up their good habits. You must be able to continually look around at what options you have before you get the ball.

Choice of pass
What type of pass is needed to be able to get the ball to your team mate the most efficient? The choice of pass has a number of factor contributing to the outcome. Does the ball need to be played in the air, over the top of defenders. Or does it need to be driven along the ground to get the ball to your team mate the quickest. Maybe the ball can be bent/curled around a defender to get the ball where you want it to go. What part of the foot do you use to pass the instep, outside of the foot this depends on where you want to pass the ball. To practice this techniques it’s best if you grab a partner and work hard to try and perfect each method of pass.

Weight of pass
The amount of pace in which the ball is hit can have a critical part to play on whether
your pass has the desired outcome. if the ball is over weighted it can run past your team mate, or make it to hard to control. If it’s under weighted it can be cut out by a defender, or it can give your team mate less time to control the ball. This can be practiced at training, but it’s match experience which can mean the difference between a under or over hit pass. In general passes should be firm, e.g. a player must be able to hit firm pass along the ground without it bouncing around and going in the air, making it easier to for your team mate to control the ball.

Support
Runs off the ball are a major part to great players repertoire. A player with great off the ball instincts provide themselves with more space to move the ball than the normal player. They also get them self into more goal scoring opportunities. To be able to create space or your self you have the awareness to look around the pitch and find spaces to move into. A change of pace get sometimes be the difference between having enough space to have the chance to player the killer space, or to get in front of the defender to meet the ball first from a cross. Angles, angles are the key, do you move backwards to receive the ball to help create a bigger angle, or move side ways to change the angle totally. Filippo ‘Super Pipo’ Inzaghi has made a career of being one of the most intelligent players of the ball in world football in finding space in the box.
